Simple Tips For An Efficient, Stress Free Moving Day

Posted on

Whether you are purchasing your first home or relocating to a new state for a new job, moving can be a stressful experience. Packing, cleaning, and the actual transport and set up of furniture and appliances is exhausting and overwhelming. While surprising to hear, you may experience physical symptoms of stress on moving day, such as headaches, fatigue, sweating, hives, forgetfulness, disorganization, mumbled speech, and other common signs of stress. These symptoms will not only cause discomfort but may affect your ability to have an effective, efficient moving day experience. If you are getting ready to move, consider taking the stress out the day with these packing and organizing hacks.

Label the Easy Way

Labeling your box of belongings with the room that it will need to be moved to is smart. However, effective labeling is necessary to make the actual moving day efficient and less overwhelming.

Consider marking the box with its intended room of your new residence AND its interior contents. Knowing what is inside each box will help you through the unpacking process. For example, you will most likely need your everyday dishes before your formal china, so it's nice to know exactly which box they're in.

Using colored tape is also a great option to coordinate moving day. Choose a specific color for each room of your new residence. For example, the boxes for your master bedroom should all be labeled with one color of tape. Then, place this same color of tape on a tag and tie it on its coordinating room. This will help your moving professionals bring the boxes into their specified room without any complications.

Store Important Items Safely

Losing items on moving day is common, so you should place some time and effort into storing your important items in a safe, secure location. In many cases, your moving company will advise you to place the following items in a secure box or safe to transport yourself during the move:

  • Jewelry
  • Monetary Items such as checks, credit cards, bank or tax statements, and coins
  • Documents including birth certificates, social security cards, passports, and medical records

Pack a First Day/Night Box

Moving is a tiring process, so you will not want to search through and unpack a bunch of boxes at the end of the day. Unfortunately, you will need a few items to clean up, dine, and relax with after moving into your new residence. To ensure you have what you will need after the move, consider placing the following items into a storage tote or large bag to use:

  • Paper Products – Paper plates and disposable utensils, paper towels, toilet paper, and trash bags will all be necessary for the evening and morning after your move.
  • Grooming Items – Taking a hot shower after the move will help you relax your body and your mind. Pack body wash, shampoo, wash cloths or bathing sponges, towels, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Be sure to pack enough for each member of your family.
  • Sleepwear and Change of Clothes – Clean sleepwear and a change of clothes for the next day should be packed for each person in the family. A clean set of sheets for each bed is also important.
  • Food and Beverages – You will not want to cook after finishing the move or the next morning, but consider packing take-out menus for nearby restaurants, a case of water and drinks, coffee and juice for the morning, and your coffeemaker.
  • Small Tool Kit – Many of your furniture pieces and belongings may need assembly after your move. In addition, adjustments and repairs may be necessary on cabinets, doors, and other areas of your home. Due to these needs, it is smart to pack a small kit for your first day and night in your new residence. In your kit, include a few screwdrivers, socket wrench set, hammer, wrenches, and a box cutter.

The entire moving process can be challenging, but the actual day of your move does not have to be difficult. Using these simple tips, your moving day experience will be efficient and stress free.
